SELECTED STUDENT WORK
-
In Metals 2 we often do a flatware project. Over the years this has been very successful and the students really seem to enjoy while learning new skills. This set is by Sherri Strandberg who was also a Womens Jewelry Association scholarship winner. sterling silver, stainless steel, 18K gold
-
The liqueur cup project was given last semester for the first time and I was quite happy with the results. Again, this is a second semester project. This set is fabricated and cast and Shelby was certainly influenced by my graduate student, Christy.
-
A softly geometric set. These ended up a little simpler than Matt had planned as he discovered the complexities of the pattern making and the forming and fitting.
-
Aarons have a very engineered and architectual look to them. They deviated very little from his original concept.
-
scored and bent tapered boxes with fabricated spheres on each end. One end detaches to allow for filling.
-
A more organic approach to the salt and pepper shaker project. Die formed silver with chasing and copper applique and formed silver spheres. One sphere on each fish detaches to allow filling.
-
This is an exquisite set made in bronze and silver. Kate became very skilled in the difficult technique of chasing and repousse. Complex fabrication, forging and forming all play a part in the construction. She also used dyed Tagua nuts.
-
Beautifully chased and repoussed silver and forged bronze comb. Details such as the tube set yellow sapphires on the back add to the special quality of this piece. She also makes use of Tagua nuts in this piece.
-
For the brush, Kate purchased a Victiorian hairbrush on Ebay and then made her own silver and bronze holder for it. Another lovely example of the chasing and repousse technique.
-
A cast and fabricated necklace. Whitney was one of my best wax workers. Her figurative waxes are really quite detailed and beautiful. Linking them together with blue sapphires creates a very lyrical necklace.
-
Sandra is one of my most purely conceptual students. Always working outside the box and with a vivid imagination her work always stands out! painted plaster, gummi centipedes, silver

-
Using number stamps to create the shape of a five which "bled" off the frame, the surface was then flooded with high karat gold solder. When finished down, and the silver was re-exposed the piece was darkened which affected the silver but not the gold. about 2 1/2" high.

Donovan was a master of the visual pun. Using humor and satire his pieces were always wearable, almost daring the wearer to make a statement. Donovan was a former graduate student who now teaches the Metals program at the University of North Dakota. mixed media
-
This is a piece that references the ancient art of alchemy. The goal of the ancient alchemist was to turn a base metal (usually lead, because of its close specific gravity to gold) to pure gold. mixed media
-
Referencing spores and fungi these pieces from Moriki's graduate Thesis Exhibition demonstrate a very high level of craftsmanship. The marriage of concept and craft has been one of the hallmarks of our graduate program in Metals and Jewelry Design. fabricated silver
-
This piece is somewhat kinetic and makes a beautiful subtle sound when shaken. It's actually a very comfortable, wearable bracelet. silver and 14K gold
-
Chris' work was very complex. He was a one person R & D , prototype, and finished piece shop. His work would utilize programmable microchips, micromotors and other high-tech components addressing the merging of man and machine. mixed media
-
Used as the title piece for Christy Cambells Spring 08 MFA Thesis Exhibition this collar of tube worms exemplifies the concept of the whole exhibition. electroformed copper, airbrushed acrylic, garnet, coral and sculpy

Christy graduated with her MFA degree last semester. Her Thesis Exhibition was called "Symbiosis" it was a highly creative show, steeped in biology and referencing some of the strange relationships that exist in the natural world. 30 rings - silver, resin, mica, prismacolor, gold plate
