Woman With Cigar - Rangoon
Since I traveled to to Burma in 1984 I will refer to it by this name and not the current name of Myanmar. This will also be so for Pagan which today is called Bagan. This shot was taken with a 250mm telephoto lens at Schwedagon Pagoda, Rangoon. (Yangon) It is the most sacred pagoda in Burma.

Tobacco Vendors -Rangoon
We traveled from Rangoon in the south to Pagan in the central plains and then onto Mandalay which was about 90 miles northeast of Pagan. This image shows tobacco sellers at a Rangoon market.

Two Chinese Ladies - Rangoon
I had been in an enclosed market in Rangoon shooting Ektachrome at 800ASA under low light conditions. Leaving I noticed two Chinese women leaning out a window. I took the shot at the pushed speed and it had always been somewhat grainy but with today's technology I was able to eliminate most of the noise.

Ox and Cart - Pagan
An oxcart at Pagan. Pagan covers 16 square mile. Most of it's standing buildings were built in the 11th thru the 13th centuries and during this time Pagan was the capital of the first Burmese Empire.

Red Buddha Shrine - Pagan
This shrine in Pagan was illuminated by a skylight. The gold gilt on the walls made the whole room glow as if there were hundreds of candles.

Burma in 1984 was a delightful country, little influenced by western culture. This woman was a basket seller at Pagan, one of the largest archaeological zones in the world.

Novice Monk - Mandalay
A novice monk outside of Mandalay. Novices may or may not become ordained Buddhist Priests. Often, they will complete their schooling under the tutelage of the priests and then re-enter the secular world.

Burmese Girls In Temple- Mandalay
Burmese women and girls colour their faces with Thanaka Bark. This mildy fragrant bark, actually the entire stem of a plant, is ground into a powder. mixed with water and applied onto the face, usually in two circles on the cheeks. Thanaka protects the skin against the sun and improves the complexion.
